Hi all

Wishing everyone a great and prosperous 2018.

I am starting this new year with a new vigor in the search of my muscle car dream.

There is currently two options on my radar. The one is a project, option 1 below and the other a ready to go vehicle, option 2 below.

Option 1 - 1971 Mach 1 Ford Mustang - Cobra Jet

Does anyone have any info on this 1971 Mach 1 Ford Mustang - Cobra Jet that is advertised by Kobus and Sons?

Was able to get a email back from them saying this vehicle is still available. I requested additional info (photos and Q&A) but was only told again the vehicle is still available. Does not really help my decision on whether to spend the money to fly up to Joburg and go have a look.

Has anyone maybe had the chance to look at this vehicle?

As mentioned in previous posts, I am in Cape Town and do not want to fly up to go look at a piece of scrap metal.

Any ideas on what a good price is on this vehicle?

This vehicle has been on my radar since it was first advertised by Bloomsbury Investment Cars in Oct 17 for R499,000.

Since then the vehicle's price has dropped to R459,000 and now (January 2018) dropped again to R419,000.

Has anyone maybe had the chance to look at this vehicle?

Any ideas on what a good price is on this vehicle?


So, the big question is project or ready to drive?

Also I have asked some questions above which I would appreciate if all can give their opinions/comments on.

From my little experience with cars (I am more of a custom bike guy) I can tell you I would much rather build one than buy one.

There are ofcourse exceptions, being that if you find a car that’s already build to your expected quality and liking and the price is right, why gamble with a build? Time is also a factor that you have to take into account.

The problem with building is that unless you have the knowledge and resources to do it yourself, you have to rely on somebody else. There’s only two or three guys I would trust in SA and guess what, they are booked up with projects for at least a year. Another problem with a build is all the hidden gremlins which pop out once you start - there always are and they are almost always worse than you could have imagined.

Just curious, but why a Mustang?

I agree with both your statements regarding buying a completed car and dealing with a project car.

True, buying a already restored vehicle does not always meet all the expectations (the vehicle I refer to in my post for example have those speakers in the back. I am not an expert but that does not look nice or right to me), however you can save yourself from some of those hidden gremlins (unless they are just covered up nicely. Spit, polished and a thick coat of paint and filler and the troll looks like a smurf).

Re why a mustang?

I grew up, like I think many of us did with the mustang, corvette and Lamborghini (must have one of those) on the wall. I love all muscle cars but really love the mustangs and the corvettes. If money was not an issue I would take a 1968 stingray corvette first and then the mustang. But someone else might disagree and that is great, as long as every V8 gets an owner.

That’s true, you rarely see good body work these days - seems most guys buy body filler by the truckload. Of course getting it done right is costly and if somebody wants to do a flip they will skimp - it’s difficult to get your money back on a well done resto job. Just my opinion but I doubt the project car will be cheaper if done right. They always cost more than you initially thought or planned for.

I have no idea of the Mustang values but there are always quite a few to choose from on the market. Of course, we all like different cars.

Blue one has been there for a long time , go low on the offer they may take it ... I actually know a guy that works there if you decide to that route I could try get you a deal

There's a gold 351 Cobra Jet for around 490 which is steep but is a proper Q code car

I had a look at an orange Mach 1 not so long ago in CPT.
460 cui, and very clean/restored.

I personally suggested to the owner to get a matching 351 and sell the (new) 460.

Would have to dig in my address book to find that number.

I have looked at that car and driven it. Very neat car with a lot of history and money spent on it. However I think mechanically the car need brakes, it doesn't stop in a straight line and would probably benefit from a full service.

If they want R419k, I'd offer R390k.
