Hi Colin, the engine number is at the top of the block behind the right hand head looking from the front of the engine. Is the rear of the engine under the front valence blocking your access? I will take a pic of my engine if it will help? My engine is currently out of the car.

Looking at the engine from the passenger side of the car the number will be on a flat horizontal section at the rear of the block at the rear of the head at the place where the bellhousing is bolted on. Hope that makes sense.

That is correct, the numbers on the tags should match the chassis number stamp and the engine stamp, but if you would prefer to not post up publicly you can send interested parties a private message with the pictures.

Does the engine number have BG before the 386? If not it won't be a Perana engine.
I think new imported unstamped engines were given a number by the Traffic Department but I think there was a logo included.
