Re: Elkie gearbox questions!

Thanks! That helps a lot, at least I now have a better idea what it'd cost and what to look for before I buy :) I know one of my dad's previous cars had a great overdrive 'box, I'll just have to check whether it was the Elkie and what auto it was; that'd mean I'd be just a bell housing and shifter a...

Re: Elkie gearbox questions!

If you know where your Dad's Elkie is - go and buy it - you know the car, you know what you are getting. Fix whatever gearbox it has - that way you get on the road much quicker. Edit: Karien, just read your intro, welcome. Even if you prefer a manual, I still say buy the auto fix it and drive it. T...

Re: New kid!

Thanks Alida; I'll try to do most of it myself, hassle my dad for some help too. But if I really feel I need to I'll call in the 'experts' :) As for engines, I'm still pretty much up in the air over small or big block; their both V8's, so that's good. I guess I'll have to try them both first, to get...

Re: El Camino wanted

It does look a bit bad; I'll be on the phone all morning tomorrow phoning people who've advertised on junkmail. It's hard to go by their ads, so many have been on there for months, with no indication of whether it's still available or not! Advertising on Mxit as well, first guy to reply offers me a...

Re: Elkie gearbox questions!

Figured as much; but if it's possible without there being serious drawbacks, I'm willing to call in some 'professional' help. It's just too hard to find a proper working manual version for sale. Gearbox problems, that's what sunk my dad's Elkie. (sigh) And I recently heard it's still standing at the...

Elkie gearbox questions!

Hi, Would it be possible to swop the auto for a manual (relatively easily)? And fitting, say, a 5spd; how will this affect performance and what other basic mods will be needed to make the most of the transplant? Also, chucking a 6cyl. in favour of a V8; same concerns as with the 'box. That is if I d...

Re: El Camino wanted

Ah yes :)
I thought it a bit steep for a faulty gearbox & starter, if you compare it to others..will have to do something about that six cylinder too.
Found another selling one with 308 engine & gearbox, 'just needs to be fitted', for R7000. No photo though, I don't like ads without photos...
