Chev 3 Speed Auto Question

I have a 327 Chevy V8 fitted with a 3 speed Auto Box into a Willys CJ2 replica Jeep. When I go to 4x4 outings, I hook the A-frame to the Jeep, disconnect the propshaft, and tow it (I don't have a trialer yet...). Removing and replacing the propshaft all the time has become a frustration. To save tim...

Re: 327 Chevy V8 Starting woes

I can now say that the problem is no more! We moved the relay for the starter closer the the starter and wrapped the exhaust to prevent heat build-up on the starter, and voila! Thank you everyone for your input! :D

Re: 327 Chevy V8 Starting woes

Thank you, Bigblock. I put the battery on slow charge for 2 days and took it for a proper test. I can say it is not the battery. I will have the timing checked on Monday and also the heat generated close to the starter. The latter makes sense because as soon as the car is warm and I switch off and t...

Re: 327 Chevy V8 Starting woes

The voltage when the car is off is 12.6V. When I crank the engine, the voltage drops to 9.6V which tells me the battery is shot. What bothers me though is that a rapid charge with a battery charger for about 15minutes, charges the battery enough for it to start, but when driving for about 30mins (wi...

Re: 327 Chevy V8 Starting woes

Thank you for the input, jmvv. I will sure do the tests. Sapphire, you might have cracked it...... I have a radiator fan that comes on as soon as I turn the isolator switch to give power to the system. That's even before I put the key in the ignition. It makes sense. I will put a seperate switch in ...

Re: 327 Chevy V8 Starting woes

Thank you for the input, guys. The Jeep went in today for a 3-4" lift  . When it returns, I will change the earth to the engine and see if it works. As for the timing, I recently had it set, so I doubt it......But who knows? Gremlins can be anywhere!

Re: 327 Chevy V8 Starting woes

I had the altenator tested recently and according to the Auto-Electrician it was fine. The gauge shows it's charging at 14.2V. I will look into it anyway. Thank you!

Re: 327 Chevy V8 Starting woes

The battery sits in the back of the Jeep. The earth is connected to the chassis with a short, thick cable. The starter itself is then also earthed to the chassis in front of the car.

Re: 327 Chevy V8 Starting woes

I've done that, but it's still the same. What puzzles me is that if the battery is fully charged, the car starts fine, but when I drive a bit, the battery is flat again (even though it charges at 14.2Volt).....
