I had similar issues with an XR3 back in the nineties. Check the connectors at the back of the alternator. Don't use individual lugs, get the proper connector. It solved all the issues.

I had a buddy who owned a 80's model Kadett 1.3. Went through about 3 camshafts over a a few years. He never drove fast, but there was a rumor that it was a fairly common on some of those engines at the time. Something to do with the oil supply to the cam?
